If an animal depends on you every day, that animal belongs in your emergency plan. Preparedness should include the animals who are part of your household, whether they are pets, service animals, or other support animals. Plan for food, water, identification, medications, leashes or harnesses, carriers when appropriate, sanitation supplies, comfort items, and copies of important veterinary information. Do not wait until an evacuation to discover whether a shelter, hotel, family member, or transportation option can accommodate your animal. Make the calls ahead of time. Keep a small animal go bag where it can be grabbed quickly. Review supplies just as you review the rest of the household kit. The goal is simple: when your family needs to move, no one is left behind.
