How Much Water Should You Store for an Emergency?

When an emergency interrupts normal services, water quickly becomes one of the most important household concerns. A good plan considers drinking, food preparation, sanitation, children, pets, and the length of the disruption. A commonly used preparedness starting point is one gallon of water per person per day, with the amount and duration adjusted for household needs and local conditions. Storage is only one part of the plan. Think about safe containers, purification or filtration options, and how you would obtain additional water if the disruption lasts longer than expected. Keep some water accessible rather than storing everything in one hard-to-reach place. Consider how you would move it if you had to leave. Prepared, not scared means knowing your water plan before the faucet stops working.
